As we make our way into fall, mountains tend to go into their off-season. Weather cools down, leaves change colors and locals wait for the snow to start falling. But one thing that never stops in mountain towns is live music. Here is a recap of some of the best concert series and festivals from this past summer and a few events to look forward to this coming winter.
One thing that makes mountain concert series in the summer so unique and special is that they are free! Live music helps mountain towns build their ambience which tends to gather laid-back crowds who do things for the experience. These concerts aren’t free just to be cheap, but they are free so that everyone has the chance to experience music together. People flock to the venues positioned at the bases of the mountains to enjoy the scenery and spend time with their families and friends. They bring their own chairs or picnic blankets and enjoy food and drinks while listening to folk, bluegrass, rock, indie, reggae and many other genres of uplifting and relaxing music. These concerts are events for the community to enjoy themselves throughout the summer. Who wouldn’t want to enjoy a picnic and some music surrounded by these views!
Here’s where you can enjoy a free concert series:
While not free, here are some other summer festivals that share the laid-back vibe of the mountain scene:
Mountain Jam - Bethel, New York
Grand Targhee Bluegrass Festival - Alta, Wyoming
Frendly Gathering - Waitsfield, Vermont
Mountain Music Fest - Oak Hill, West Virginia
Even in the cold snowy winter, there is no shortage of outdoor live music in the mountains. Ski resorts across the country create concert lineups and festivals throughout the season, sometimes in conjunction with another event and sometimes just for fun. In the winter, lots of concerts and festivals line up with action sports events like world cup ski racing in Killington, VT or half-pipe and big air competitions at the X Games in Aspen, CO. The combination of music and action sports creates an exciting and lively environment in the mountains, which is a bit different than the relaxed summer feel. Ski resorts act as a great venue for concerts and music festivals in the winter because it allows people to enjoy the endless fun activities on the snow along with the live music that everyone comes together to hear.
Ski resorts love to celebrate the end of the season with a party. Check out these season closing parties and festivals full of live music and exciting activities:
Spring Back to Vail - Vail, Colorado
Breckenridge Spring Finale - Breckenridge, Colorado
